Etiquette posted Mar 1st 2009, 8:26PM
Mood: FrustratedMusic: NONE. ;o;
Just my opinions on copyright and etiquette on the internet, mostly pertaining to art. By the way, I read that once you have made a drawing it is your property. Thus, don’t forget that everything on my websites is mine unless otherwise stated. That goes for my characters, too. Sources can be an artist, a book, a magazine, a website, etc., so adjust my examples as necessary. Not all of your sources will be online links or will even have a known artist.

Why should I mention sources?
If you do not say where you got an image that you used/copied, you are stealing. By saying who and where you got it from you are protected from accusations of theft. You also tell everyone who views your drawing what you were looking at and thus give them another possible path to inspiration. Stating sources can only help you and avoid trouble. It is especially important to say where you got things if you are selling your finished product. The use of music on YouTube has been really touchy lately even if it is non-profit. I’m not sure if this is simply for use or if it is due to a lack of stated sources, but none of the music-deprived videos I have seen have had citations.

What if I copy something exactly?
~The original drawing/photo was by <name> and can be found here <link>.
~The original of this drawing/photo can be found at <link>.
~The character belongs to <name>.
~The character is from <name/link>.
If you had an image (or multiple images) next to you that you copied exactly you should always say where you got it from. The original image was not yours, so you have to say who it really belongs to. This goes for characters, too.

What if I only use the image as reference without copying it exactly?
~I used this drawing/photo as a reference <link>.
~I used a drawing/photo by <name> as a reference.
~I based this off of the character <name> from <title>.
~I based this off of a character I saw here <link>.
If you used a reference you should cite it. If the original idea wasn’t yours you can’t really claim it, so if you have pictures laid out that you were looking at for bits and pieces you should make mention of them.

What if I am copying someone’s style but I didn’t really have a reference next to me?
~I was looking at <name>’s style before I did this.
~I was thinking about <name/link> while making this.
You can’t actually copyright a style, so you do not have to state sources. The thing is, citing is good for critiques because people can tell you what you did well and what you need to improve on. Also, maybe someone else wants to know what you were looking at- especially if your style changed drastically. The artist will also appreciate getting mentioned.

So what if I use you as a reference? Is that okay? How should I go about doing it? Can I use your art on my website or something like that?
~I copied a drawing by SuketchiLT. <link>
~I based this off of a drawing by SuketchiLT. <link>
~I used a drawing by SuketchiLT as a reference. <link>
I do not mind being used as a reference. In fact, it makes me feel special. Feel free to copy my drawings or use them for ideas. Just mention me. And if you’d like, you can link me to your finished product so I can see what you’ve done with something I made. (Through email or a comment on SheezyArt, DeviantArt, or FaceBook.) If you want to use something of mine on a website please ask for permission. I want to know where my stuff is going. If your website is appropriate, I’ll probably say ‘yes.’ I just don’t want my things used in places like porn sites, things promoting drugs, or things involving politics. I like to keep my stuff clean, so it’d be cool if you kept it in clean places, too. If you’re trying to use one of my characters… Well… I wouldn’t recommend it. They can be pretty specific. I will not approve the use of my characters in any ongoing comics you are planning.

Do you think there is a right and a wrong way to leave a comment on something?
Yes and no. There isn’t an official way, but there are ways of seeming more intelligent and polite. For example, if you don’t like something that someone made, please say why so the person knows what to fix, otherwise you’re just being an ignorant jerk. If you like it, it’s also good to say why, because the maker knows what they are doing well. Try to read or at least skim descriptions (I know I write long ones, thus the ‘skim.’) before leaving a comment so you don’t ask something that was already written out. When leaving a critique on something that you don’t think came out nicely, try not to blame the artist/maker. It’s much better to say “In my opinion, the ear looks a bit off.” rather than “You drew the ear weird.” It’s just a nicer way to put things. Blaming the person can make them feel bad and become disheartened. Yes, this sounds dumb, but it’s true, so be nice to your fellow artists.

What if I’m really upset with someone? Like, maybe I think they stole something or didn’t cite their references or they said something really offensive to me?
Try to handle everything in a calm, mature manner. If you don’t like a comment someone left on something you posted you can just delete it. If it’s something that’s really bad you can always report them. If you think someone’s stolen something let them know in a very polite manner. It’s possible that the person is new to referencing or left their citation in a weird place in their profile. If you really think there’s a big enough problem after contacting the person about it you can report them to the people in charge of discipline, such as moderators, administrators, teachers, etc.

Is there more than one way to interpret art?
This is another yes and no. You can interpret art any way you want because that gives it meaning for you personally. However, you shouldn’t argue with the artist about it. What the artist meant and what you understood may be different, and it is insulting to the artist to get in a fight over something like that. If you say ‘It makes me think of __’ and the artist says ‘Oh, well I meant __,’ just accept it. I’ve had people argue with me over my own drawings and it is extremely frustrating. Art is a way of communicating and translating a thought into something everyone else can experience, which means that it can be very personal. It’s like posting poems for everyone to read. So interpret away, but keep an open mind and try to avoid fighting wars over it.

There are some words that I can never seem to keep straight, like ‘to,’ ‘two,’ and ‘too.’ Which is which?

you're = you + are
your = 2nd person possessive pronoun

it's = it + is
its = 3rd person neuter possessive pronoun

there = location, such as 'where' (both end in 'here')
they're = they + are
their = 3rd person plural possessive pronoun

to = location
too = also, as in "Me, too!" or to show an excessive amount, as in “Too much!”
two = number

here = location
hear = as in one of the five senses

where = location
wear = as in to have on clothes, or it could mean 'to damage by way of rubbing or use' such as to 'wear something down'
ware = product, such as silverware; skill; can be used as another form of 'beware' or 'wary'

break = to damage
brake = to stop, as when driving

~When in doubt grab a dictionary.

Your art is filled with happy. I like your characters, too. o: They're amazing. They inspire me to continue developing my own currently mediocre characters. xD

But yeah, kudos on the win-ly-ness. :3
